Core Problem
IMDb overwhelms users with too much information, making it difficult to quickly and confidently decide what to watch.
IMDb is one of the most comprehensive movie databases available, but its wealth of information can work against users who just want a quick answer to "what should I watch?" I conducted a redesign project to identify pain points and create a more user-friendly experience focused on discovery and decision-making.

The age-old dilemma of finding a movie worth your time is something everyone experiences. Users were getting lost in IMDb's dense information architecture and struggling to make confident viewing decisions. The challenge was to help people find their next watch as easily and enjoyably as watching it.
Problem
Making finding a movie just as easy and enjoyable as watching a movie.

I began with surveys to identify user groups and their frustrations with the current site. From there, I developed personas and conducted card sorting exercises to understand how users naturally categorize movie information.

Key activities included:
User surveys to identify pain points
Persona development based on survey data
Card sorting sessions to inform information architecture
User testing with participants matching target personas
Iterative mockups leading to final high-fidelity designs
Process
Making finding a movie just as easy and enjoyable as watching a movie.

I tested navigation patterns and content hierarchy throughout the process, using participant feedback to validate design decisions before moving to high-fidelity work.
I delivered a redesigned experience with three major improvements: a streamlined navigation system with clearer hierarchy, a reimagined homepage with focused purpose, and redesigned movie pages that surface key information faster. The new navigation structure reduced cognitive load by simplifying menu options. The homepage now guides users toward discovery rather than overwhelming them. Movie pages were reorganized so users can answer their questions "Is this worth watching?" and "Where can I watch it?" in seconds rather than minutes.

Through user testing, I found that more information doesn't always help users make better decisions, it often paralyzes them. The users I interviewed wanted quick access to ratings, where to watch, and a general vibe check, not an encyclopedia entry. This taught me to prioritize user needs and trust that users will dig deeper if they want to, but they need the essentials upfront first.

Next steps: The current redesign focuses on the movie discovery and decision-making journey. A full implementation would expand to include personalized recommendations based on viewing history, social features for sharing watchlists with friends, and refined filtering that learns from user behavior over time.
